How to Give DNS entries in HP-UX ?
Please help me to find out a method to make the internet work in the HP-UX platform. I have 100 HP-UX workstaions and three servers installed in NIS . When we try to to give a DNS entry (We dont have a local DNS server. We are using ISP's DNS server)the machine hangs. In Solaris if you give DNS entries in /etc/resolv.conf it works perfectly with out any problems. but if we give any entires in HP-UX the systems will hang . I tried out giving all the options with /etc/nsswitch.conf and /etc/resolv.conf . If any one knows a solution for this ,Please help us

Dear
by default, the name service, gets the name resolution from DNS. u can change this in /etc/nsswitch.conf file by

hosts files [NOTFOUND=continue] dns nis

this tells the hpux system to first solve the name resoultion from local /etc/hosts file, then if not found
then continue to dns. if u want to lookup in nis then add
the same keyword to dns criteria also. if u dont give the
keyword of notfound=continue, then UX does'nt consults
other services.

hope this solves ur problem.

Hello:

Are you sure the DNS is working OK and it´s recheable from your system. Check nsswitch.conf

mario & avsrinivas was totally confused with your question ph7360. In HP-UX it should works similar with Solaris. You would still have to add a file /etc/resolv.conf (You would have to do this as well if you are in Solaris). The format of the /etc/resolv.conf is like this:

domain <domain-name>
nameserver <primary dns ip_address>
nameserver <secondary dns ip_address>

It wouldn't hurt to add in a search domain.

And don't forget to add dns for your hosts entry in the /etc/nsswitch.conf

Hoep this will help,

-David

Thanks a Lot!
What srinivas told is true and the only method. But it wont work in my case .Even in what david said is also true .both of these should work together for the name resolution. But at the same time you should have same domain name for Both DNS and NIS. and I feel you should have a DNS server inside (May be primary or Secondery) in your network .Then only the name resolution will happen. It will look up in to DNS first then NIS table then /etc/hosts. At the same time if you dont have a DNS inside your network . ( I mean if you use DNS of the ISP) it wont work . Because it will look for the name resolution from the resolv.conf .IF the DNS server of the ISP is behind the firewall ,then the name resolution wont happen and the system will hang

Hello everybody!
Can anybody explain me what does /etc/resolv.conf contain?
i know that it contains DNS servers query order and client's domain, but I found on one machine this file looking like this:

nameserver 10.163.132.1
search ikut.owlo.pzu.pl owlo.pzu.pl
#domain ikut.owlo.pzu.pl

What does the line starting with "search" mean and if it's neccesary?
I'll be glad for any piece of info.
Greets.
