DNS problems

I've had DNS server problems on my win2k server ever since I started. I'm getting no errors in the DNS section of event viewer. However, the DNS server just stops responding throughout the day. I have my server auto-reboot twice a day to try to prevent this, but it still hasn't helped. I've figured out that it's the DNS server because when it's not responding, I can ping the IP number of my server but I can't ping any of the host names of my server. That tells me that my DNS stops responding to requests. It doesn't shut down, it just stops responding (with no error messages).

I DO have one warning in my event viewer that has to do with the DNS server. I don't know, however, if this is the source of my problems. It's source is netlogon, event ID 5773:

"The DNS server for this DC does not support dynamic DNS. Add the DNS records
from the file '%SystemRoot%\System32\Config\netlogon.dns' to the DNS server
serving the domain referenced in that file."

In netlogon.dns, there are a whole bunch of goofy hostnames for my domain that it expects to find in my DNS records. They're mostly _ldap, _kerberos, and _gc hostnames. I don't want to put them in my DNS records!

Any ideas why my DNS server would just stop responding altogether with no "errors" at all??

HELP!

I don't get it. The article says that the problem was fixed with SP2. I installed SP2 when I setup my Server. I was STILL getting the error. I installed SP3 yesterday and the error is still occurring! Do you know how I can fix it?

right click your domain.com forward lookup zone and go to properties. There will be a combo box saying allow dynamic updates. set this to yes. Then you might want to check all other zones to make sure that this is checked on all of them.

I have not personally seen this error before but it sounds similar to one where DHCP was dynamically adding the records and DNS did not allow this to happen so it had some issues.

Let me know if this helps Thanks

I changed it like you said. I'll find out if it works as I monitor my log files. Thanks!

You might try nslookup also. From dos, type nslookup. Then type ls -t domainname.com and see what comes up. Just look it over and see if anything strange strikes your fancy. Type exit when your done as nslookup opens an interactive session with dns. Good luck. Glen A. Johnson
