My sister's computer is not able to access the internet. She uses a dial-up modem, and she can connect, but cannot browse the internet. I brought the PC home and connected it to my network through the NIC, but still no internet. Here's what I've done and found:

*IPCONFIG /ALL - By DNS Server it shows a question mark
*Assign static DNS server address - Can access internet
*Removed WINSOCK entries in registry and reinstalled TCP/IP
*Reinstalled SP2 (problem was there before SP2, hoped it would fix)
*Remove IPv6 from NIC - no change
*Run Adaware and Spybot - found nothing
*Applied all Windows and Office updates (like that would work)

I'm at a loss. I sure don't want to have to reinstall XP, but that is all I can think of left to try.

Please help!

See faq779-4625

. Do the WinsockFix.exe utility
. Follow the Netsh.exe instructions for SP2

dwhitlow,

Not a fix, really, but if you call your sister's ISP, you can probably get the IP addresses of their DNS servers and hard code them into the TCP/IP properties.

I'd try bcastner's suggestions first, but if you're still having issues, give them a call.

In the interest of completeness there does appear an issue with the ICS DNS proxy service under SP2. If you are using ICS under Pro or Home, Wishdiak's suggestion above is perfectly apt. Hard code your ISP's DNS servers in the ICS Host adapter.
