dns , pop3, question

I have a very small problem,
my server domain name has a local name ( not registered ) eg, server.local , and i do have a domain name registered, the one that i'm using for exchange 2000

i set up my email , and it's working beatiful, but my question is , if a user wants to check his email from home, i would have to supply him with the pop and smtp names , the funny if he enters anyname.myrealdomain.com , it would work, and he could check his email no problem, but how to limit that so i could assign a name myself , eg, mail.mydomain.com instead of anything.mydomain.com

any ideas, i think its a dns setup, but i dont' know how to set it up

remember my server has a local domain name, do i have to create a new zone ? any ideas how to do that will be greatly appreciated,

I believe you are looking in the wrong place. Whoever is hosting your DNS records can give you the following information. I had this issue with my server. You need to check the zone file. Check the MX records and see if they have a wild card * for your host name, if this were the case any server name you used on your domain would resolve to the IP address of your Exchange machine...make sense? If you don't know who has your records...Do an nslookup. In the example below, I did an nslookup for the Mail Exchange records for buffalobills.com. If ignitesports is hosting my records, I would contact them to take a look at my records. Most likely you have a wild card *, you probably can add your mail servers host name and give it a higher priority, 10 being the highest, it depends on your service. If you don't know who the company is, go to

http://www.netsol.com

and go to whois and put in the domain.

wow, that is exactly what i was looking for, but that rises another question ,

now i want to give an employer a pop and a smtp address, how to i creat, something like this ( mail.mydomain.com for pop, and smtp.mydomain.com, for the smtp ) without the wild card, or should i enable the wild card, with some extra dns settings are required,

If your pop server and smtp server are the same machine which I believe they are then in outlook or outlook express you would put either your IP address of the machine for your server or the name that is registered with your hosting company. In your MX records, if MX preference = 10 MailExchanger = mail.mydomain.com then mail.mydomain.com would be your pop3 and smtp server. They wouldn't be different if they are the same machine necessarily. Obviously using the FQDN allows you to change your IP address without hosing people who access the server if the IP changes for some reason. Hope that helps....
