Hi,

Having installed a few MS Server Standard servers in the past this time I opted to install the SBS edition of 2008 in a small office environment as I was told it will “manage itself”. Turns out I am having more grief with this than any in the past, and as it is for a friend not even getting paid for it. Anyway I was hoping someone could help me with the issues.

Every few days the users will report loss of email connectivity and access to websites. I can remote in and gain access and notice that yes they have lost connection to their externally hosted email (connecting through MS Outlook, using IMAP protocol), they can get on some .com domains but no .co.uk domains.

I have also noticed that in the SBS console the connected computers do not have a tick by them they have a question mark so it is not seeing the status of them correctly. Also I have lost connection to the NAS box. I can ping it but when I run and type the name of it or the IP it does not resolve.

I am using a HP server, all PCs are connected to a HP 24port Gig switch and so is the BT Business Broadband router. The server’s anti-virus is NOD32.

Can anyone shed some light on what may be happening please as I do not have a strong networking background?

Thanks,
Andy

SBS Servers are not too bad as long as proper configuration from the Server is done. In order for the SBS to work well, DNS, DHCP, Exchange, etc. need to be configured and running in your Network.
I suspect a DNS misconfiguration here, if the client computer are getting disconnected from Exchange. Do you have an DNS Internal IP (not External IP) configured on all of your Client computers?
If you can provide an ipconfig /all info of one of your client computers and your server's ipconfig /all and Post them here.
I would also check on any Event Viewer's log errors from your SBS server.

Please update us.

Hi cjweaser,

I have noticed the following errors that I see immediately in Event Viewer everytime I restart:

DNS Error -
Warning: Event ID: 4013
The DNS service is waiting for Active Directory Domain Services

As it mentiones Active Directory I had a look in the logs and it states:
Error: Event ID: 91
Could not connect to Active Directory

Below is a copy of IPCONFIG /ALL on a client PC and the server, thanks for looking.
