DNS not working

Hi Everyone,
I'm a newbie to the Server software, so everyone bear with me :)

My Problem:
We switched internet providers, and after about 24 hours, the new IP Address was updated over the world. However, the old IP address of our domain and email server are still reading the OLD IP address from the old Internet provider.

So:
Within our network --
- DNS is not working (it still resolves to the old IP address). Email and going to ourdomain.com does not work unless I just use the new IP address.

Outside our network --
-everything works properly (email and pinging our domain).

INFO:
We have 2 servers: One has Windows 2003 Server, the other one has NITIX installed, and is running our own Web and Email servers.

I have checked most of the settings in the Windows 2003 Server, and they seem correct (but I am a newbie). The old IT guy is still running the Nitix server (denying me access).

Would the problem lie in the Nitix server (Mail and Web Server), or within the Windows 2003 Server? and what things should I check?

Sounds like you have an internal DNS server that you need to update.

Edit the Forward Lookup zone in DNS for your domain and modify the records there.

You may also need to do an "ipconfig /flushdns" from each workstation after you've updated your DNS server.

Thanks for your quick reply.

I've checked the Forward Lookup zone in the DNS for my domain, and they appear to be correct (the IP address listed for mydomain.com is the proper one, and not the old one).

If I ping mydomain.com, It comes up with the old IP address. Since mydomain.com is being hosted on the other Mail and Web Server, do you suppose it is a setting in there?

Drop to a command prompt and type in ipconfig/flushdns. This will clear out your local cache.

Yes, I've already tried /flushdns, but it is still pulling up the old IP address when resolving to our domain.com.

Did you check your DNS forward zone to make sure that server isn't in it with the old IP?

You say you can't resolve your email from the inside...your going to have a listing for something like "mail.yourcompany.com" in your DNS most likely...you'll have to change that to the new IP.

1. Yes, I've looked everywhere in the dns management console for the old IP address, but can't find anything.

2. The person who setup the Web and Email server, just has "ourdomain.com" for what we put into the smtp and pop3 servers.

I cannot find anything with "mail." in front of it. Would this be in Windows 2003 server? or in the Nitix Server (the one hosting the Email and Website)?

Look in your DHCP scope and confirm which server is providing DNS.

Check the hosts file in /system32/drivers/etc. May have the ipaddress written in there.
 
Ah...good point bigdaddy!

DHCP is going to be hopefully on the same server as your DNS snap-in.

Hi Guys,

Ok, I think something is really buggered on our network.

Server - IPCONFIG
IP Address: 192.168.0.254
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Workstation IPCONFIG
IP Address: 192.168.0.###
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Now this is where it gets interesting:
When I go to 192.168.0.254, I get a Lexmark Markvision page (obviously a networked printer).

Back at the DHCP:
Server is ourdomain.local[192.168.0.254]
--Scope[192.168.0.0] domain

Please tell me this is crazy :)

Update:

Apparently Markvision server is running on the main server to manage jobs sent to the Lexmark All-In-One.

But, this doesn't explain the DNS issue we are still getting.

Also, re: Hosts file:
- all the workstations and the server have the current IP address and domain in the Hosts file.

If your server ip is .254, then you need to forward your router to that IP.

003 Router -- 192.168.0.1
006 DNS Servers -- 192.168.0.254
044 WINS/NBNS Servers -- 192.168.0.254
 
Sorry...confused threads.

This is most definately a DNS issue. Somewhere in your DNS it's providing the old IP address. Drop to a command prompt from your DNS server and ping the FQDN...who responds? Flush the DNS on that server, then do it again. If it still comes back to the old IP, then you have to find where it's coming from in your DNS server.
