DNS no longer updates host(A) dynamically

Hi all

As I mentioned the issue in the subject box. It used to work well, but recently I've noticed that when I joined a PC to our domain, the host(A) record for this PC is not updated in DNS - Forward Lookup Zone.

I double checked the DHCP setting - DNS tab:

Enable DNS dynamic updates according to the settings below:
Always dynamically update DNS A and PTR records.
Discard A and PTR records when lease is deleted

what I have tried on client.
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
unplug the network cable
etc.

Depends on what sort of client it is unless you have changes some of the defaults. If its a xp or 2k box it will register its record itself, if its a earlier system you have to set dhcp to register on behalf of a client. The account used to register the address set in dhcp can also be a issue depending on how everything is setup.

There are security settings that also relate to this if its a ad zone. Ie secure updates

since dhcp owns the record, the client side attempts should yield no positive result. the client will not register itself when its a dhcp client though.

the most common cause for this problem is the dhcp client service is stopped or disabled. This service handles dynamic registrations of most types (IP, DNS, etc.)..it does NOT just handle DHCP related items....

Hi all

First of all thank you for your reply.

Our clients are all Wins 2k and XP SP2, and as I mentioned that it used to work so well.
Recently I just changed the scope to accomodate more PCs since we are expanding business.

To Brnadon

Where can I find the DHCP client services?
I really don't think the problem is lieing on the clients, because the Pc I joined to domain is new one. And I have tried to delete an existing host(A) record, and issued ipconfig /registerdns from this Pc, it does not work.

go to start|run
type in services.msc
look in the right pane for the DHCP Client service
check its status..is it automatic and enabled (if no, change it to this)


if you just expanded your scope...double check and ensure your dhcp scope and server options are all configured properly too

Thanks for your reply. I restarted DHCP client service, it does not help.

What should I check on the configuration for both dhcp scope and server?
Since I just changed the scope from:
192.168.0.150 - 192.168.0.200
TO
192.168.0.100 - 192.168.0.200.

And I just found out the IP address for the router (192.168.0.154) was in this range, I already excluded this IP address.

DNS: <internal domain controller 1>, <internal DC 2> (put whichever is physically closer to the client as primary DNS if you have multiple sites)

shut down workstation not registering

DHCP: enable dhcp logging

In the log file, you should show dns registration attempts (successes and failures).

Hi Brandon

Thank you for your help and about DHCP logging.
The log has been enable since I first started with the company, I had a look at the DhcpSrvLog-Fri.log, OMG... none of request from all clients are successful, not even one. The same log for the whole week - FAILED.

What should I do? Please.

install support tools if not installed already

provide DC IPs (to ensure proper DNS configuration on DHCP)

ok run this from client and dhcp server:

netdiag /v > netdiag.txt
ipconfig /all > ipconfig.txt
supply all settings for all dhcp scope/server options (DNS, domain name, WINS, etc.)

we'll start there...

there is a kb to turn off dhcp taking ownership of dns records im trying to find but no luck so far. It is of concern with using a DC for the DHCP server especially, so the article should be followed.

I assume for your scope options you are giving the default gateway, the DC for DNS, and potentially the DNS domain name?

DC self registration looks to be working great...
With that said, there are known issues with running DHCP on a DC, namely in that both FRS and DHCP are JET databases and will contend for resources, causing potential false errors in one or the other.

I am going to build a new server as second DC for redundancy purpose.
Before that I got another big job to take care of too i.e. Domain Rename. SIGH!
