Hello,

I recently moved into an apartment with a cable modem. I have a HP desktop that I purchased in 2001. I have always used it with a dialup connection, but am now having problems connecting via LAN.

I have tried out many options and now believe that my NIC is not compatible with my operating system, Windows XP. I am able to ping number addresses (ex. 216.109.117.204) but not name addresses (ex. which I have been told that my machine is not configured with a DNS server address nor is the network card XP compatible.

My NIC is:
Name: Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC
Driver Provider: Microsoft
Driver Date: 7/1/2001
Driver Version: 5.396.530.2001

Is there any updates for this driver to help me out or should I get a new card. Please give me advice for my best options?

Thank You,

You need to assign a DNS address to your network card, and your card is compatible with windows XP. You will want to find out the DNS IP address of your ISP to add to the settings of the network adapter.

how do i find the address out? Calling ISP or ipconfig?
