DNS name works half the time

I have a DNS forward lookup with the name of "cam" pointing to 192.168.1.50, which is an internal IP camera. The idea behind it is that I want to be able to open a new window and type cam and it takes me to the homepage of that camera. This works, but only about half of the time. Half of the time it goes to the camera, and the other half of the time it does a verizon web search for cam (meaning it cannot find cam).

When I ping cam I get:

Pinging cam.MyDomainName.local [IP Address]

Where the IP Address is 192.168.1.50 when it is working, and something like 8.15.7.117 when it isn't.

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Windows Server 2003 SB

Thanks! Let me know if you need more info.

white,
It sounds like you have two machines both named "cam", one with ip address 192.168.1.50, the other with ip address 8.15.7.117. Look in your DNS or try to find the other machine. It can be difficult to find that other machine, but having two machines with the same name on the network is not good.

Good luck.

what's your machine configured to use for DNS. Sounds like you're getting results from more than one DNS server.

Could one be an external Internet (ISP) address?

Do you find that you can always ping the IP address?

What is your ISP?
Also, what are the DNS servers that they gave you?

the IP you give seems to belong to Level 3, somewhere near Washington(?)
I don't think it is another machine on your network as kmills suggests.

How is your DNS server setup on your network?
