Is there any other way other than using DNS in Exchange 2000 to send mail to another Email domain by manually inputting the ip address of the Exchange server. My boss has told me that in Exchange 5.5 this was done by going to the connections config and then you have an option to specify by a:DNS b:send to host or c:specify by host we have recently upgraded to Exchange 2000 and can't see this kind of option.

You can send via DNS or via a 'smart host' when you create an SMTP connector. I send all outbound internet mail to a 'smart host', which is my SMTP virus scanner. The smart host name is just a dns name. eg smtp01.company.com (MX record)

Hi thanks for your reply. That is exactly what we are doing at the moment, sending our e-mail via our virus scanners which works fine but we have had a problem before where the servers at the company that provides us with this service, thier servers went down and all our outbound mail was held in a queue.I was wondering if it is possible to direct e-mail bound for another e-mail domain via ip address rather than using MX records to avoid this situation.I know this could be done in Exchange 5.5 but looks to me as though this isn't possible in 2000.

does the company that provides you scanning service also provide you with external DNS servers. If not then you could get you internet mail connector to deliver via DNS and have you exchange box use your internal DNS server which have a forward to external DNS ip addresses.

If you want to do your own smtp scanning we use the Trend products ( and they seem to work fine.

You can use a SMTP connector for each domain but you should really work on the problem. Thus move to another domain or run your own DNS. Takes maybe 10 mins to setup on a bad day.

Also for the IP use [ip.ip.ip.ip] with the numbers that way we never look at DNS. Dan
