I'm not sure I'm putting this in the right place but I'll put this out there.

I'll start by saying I work for a retail company with seventeen stores in five states. I am the human resources manager but IT also falls in my job description.

We had a website developer design a new website. The go live date was September 1st. Due to some last minute changes is got delayed for the launch.

I signed up with a recommended company called Hostmonster to host our website We were with Hostwithclarity already on our old site. So I contacted our registrar and they walked me through the process of pointing our DNS to the new host.

Hostmonster recommended EZSitemove for data migration which I figured would work smashingly considering I'd never done it before.

Tuesday morning we switched the DNS. I had set up all of our email accounts with our new host. We do not use an exchange server. The website was launched and everything appeared to be going okay but we weren't receiving email. I was told this was because the site was still propogating.

So Wednesday morning, I logged into our intranet and got an error saying our account had been suspended. I contacted Hostmonster and was told there was an error in a script on our website and it was crashing their server. They suspended our account, told us we had one chance to fix and if not our account would be deleted. I contacted our site administrator and he made a fix and we relaunched but were told it caused the server to crash again so our account was deleted. I asked for access to our files and they refused.

So through our website administrator, we signed up with a new host Media Temple. I set up all the email accounts in Plesk. I had a backup disk of all of our files but have never used FTP before so I contacted EZsitemove and they still had the files so they started loading everything on Friday.

My question is: our website was working but now you can only go to the homepage You cannot view any of the other pages. Secondly, our intranet will not load.

How do I fix this?

Your intranet 'should' be an internally hosted website because you don't want it viewable to the outside world.

You need to ensure that the entire site was loaded up, it currently looks like it's only the main page (also it could be down to a rights issue, you need to ensure that all directories that contain content are readable by everyone.

First port of call would be to check the contents of the new ftp server to ensure that it contains all of the files needed, secondly I would make sure that the site isn't coded in such a way that it looks for an ip address of an old server.

Next you really need to ensure that you host your internal intranet site internally, just having a local server there serving pages internally won't take too much resources up.

Finally you really need to get a dedicated web master, someone who understands the intricacies of web hosting and changing hosts and all that that entails.

SimonD.

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

It would be my guess that your pages are not loaded on the server correctly or at all. Have your web developer check the links to ensure they are pointing to the correct location for the files.

Most importantly follow SimonD's advice and employ someone, consultant, part timer or the like to manage your site for you that has a strong understanding of web hosting.

Everything will be OK in the end.
If it's not OK, then it's not the end

Is the /main directory there? It is either not there or some other permission problem.

Thanks for all your help! Apparently when the files were transferred not all files were grabbed. On the flip side, when the files were transferred to the new site, they overwrote some of the website files. The website developer got the site fixed and our intranet guy got the internal site fixed.

I requested an SSL certificate from Media Temple which they took care of today. The main purpose of our inet, as we call it is a training program for our sales reps.

I'll admit that I can fumble my way through setting up email accounts, outlook accounts, troubleshooting printer issues, rebooting servers, and the like I don't have much experience in writing code or the website stuff. I'm learning as I go. The person that created our inet is currently in Australia and I would really like to be able to make simple fixes if I have to.

We are what you would call a "low tech" company. We currently have a unix server for seventeen stores in five states and our pos(should be point of service but it's piece of ________) is procomm plus. We still use okidata printers at this stage of the game. The backup tapes go in this antiquated tape drive everyday. We also run on voip oneflex lines so whenever Qwest internet broadband goes down, our phones and computers go down. I get the call nine times out of ten to fix the issue.

What it boils down to is where do I look for self-taught help? I would also like to make a document library in our inet to store our policy procedure manual. Our CEO would like the entire manual online. He wants an employee to log in, read each section, and electronically sign before moving on. We also adminster tests on the inet.

I appreciate your feedback.
