We are having a slight problem with DND feature on a norstar MICS ver 4.1

When ext 3414 is on DND external calls to thier direct line are forwarded to annouther phone. On that phone the LED Says "DND FORWARD" I am trying to get this to behave normally. IE it would "silently ring" (flash) then go to thier voicemail. I have tried to figure out what is causing this but have not yet found where this option is.

I have currently set that client up using forward to voicemail (Feature 984) in place of DND. what are the differences in these features?

You need to remove the prime set on the target line. When a phone is in DND, calls go to the prime of any line ringing on that set. When there is no prime, it flashs on the set until the forward no answer sends it to VM or where ever. The DND feature is to stop the phone from ringing, but not to forward the calls. Feature 984, forwards all calls to VM.

Thank you for your help about the prime set.

Although I am curious what the other differences between DND and Forward to Voicemail are (assuming you have voice mail set up as the destination for forward no answer)

The reason I ask is that I know of at least one annoying difference you cannot transfer a call to the person when they are in DND mode.

Are there other differences that I am unaware of because I was thinging about changing everyones DND button to the forward to voicemail feature as it makes it more convienient when other people need to forward a call to thier voice mail. (yes I do know there is a feature to forward directly to someones voicemail box but the main issue with this is they cannot use the internal autodail numbers to transfer to thier mailboxes and makes the process much more annoying)

Any thought on this

the other thing that I find very strange is that when you are DND you still get the you missed a call chime when a call is forwarded to voicemail. at least in my mind DND should be a function that silences the phone completely you would think a phone that has a button that physically disconects the speaker would be a better option.

For the most part forward to Voicemail is the way to go. I do not like the DND feature. That missed call chime is actually a voicemail feature. The user can turn it off if they wish. The feature 984 is also a VM feature. It will always set the call forward to VM DN. The only reason I can think of to use DND is to remove a telephone from a hunt group. Also another difference with DND is that an internal user cannot dial an extension that is in DND, it will return a busy.

That is interesting on our system an internal user can call an extension it acts just like an external call dialing them directly. They do get "DO NOT DISTURB" displayed on their LCD when they call the user but it still calls them. (of course it dosen't ring it just flashes on their phone and then goes to VM when they don't answer)

out of curiosity how does one disable the chime?

yeah I think I am definitely going to switch everyone to forward to voicemail. Thank you for all of your input on this I really appreciate it.

Turn off the Chime by going into the Mailbox>Admin>Greeting>Forward>Display Caller ID (turn this off)

Easy use of F986 transfer
Just program a button with that feature then you can transfer to the mailbox easier.

once again this forum has delivered thank you guys for the imput.
