Distribution List Permissions

I'm running Exchange 5.5 and I have an ALL USERS distribution list, I want to limit the rights to that list so only a selection of people can send e-mails to it.
Any ideas?

Use Exchange Admin to view the properties of your ALL USERS distribution list. There will be a tab for "Delivery Restrictions". In the pane labeled "Accept messages from", the default is "All". Change it to "List" and then add the persons or distribution lists that you want to allow to send to your ALL USERS list.

Thought I would just bump this article since it explains my situation. I have set up a distribution list in Exchange. Everyone can email to it just fine and all messages are delivered. I want to make it so that only certain people can email to it. Here is my problem... Exchange will only keep the initial restriction setting. If I go back and change who can email the list, those settings are not kept.

Example:

I set up a list called "list". I made no restriction on who can email that list. Everyone can email to it without problem. I now go back into Exchange Administrator and change the restrictions to only accept email from user "Joe". I click Apply and OK.

Exchange will STILL allow ANY user, not just Joe, to send an email to the "list" distribution list. Exchange delivers the email as if there were no restrictions.

The same things happens in reverse as well. If I set up a list and set a restriction, I cant later go in and change the restriction that was made when I created the list. Exchange Admin shows that the setting has been changed but still operates based on the initial setting.

If I delete the list and recreate it with the same name, it still doesnt work.

This is really frustrating..

Anyone have any ideas? Do I need to restart the MTA or something?

you don't need to restart anything...

when you make these changes, are you doing it as the exchange service account or an account with equivalent privileges? do you have just one server? what SP are you at?

I am logged into the server as the Exchange service account. We only have one server. We are at SP4.

what is weird is that it allows me to make the change, doesnt give any error, but then its like it doesnt process the change request.

that is weird...

what about other attributes? If you check off "hide from address book", does it work?

Everything else appears to be working correctly. I change change permissions on directories, users, just about everything I can think of. That includes hiding recipients from the address book.

Also, if I delete the distribution list and then recreate it, no matter what I put the restictions as before hitting apply, the restrition settings revert back to the original distribution list that I deleted!!! In order to have a distribution list with the correct settings, I have to create a new list and call it something else.

wow...ok, if you don't mind trying something else? Grant a different account (one that you can log in as) permissions to modify attributes on one of those DL's , log in as that account and try to make the change....
