hiya all,

there's been a few posts similar to this, but i've got a slightly different problem.

I've created contact entries with external web email accounts in AD. There are already distribution lists set up, e.g. IT Department. I've added those contacts to the distribution list by clicking on Member Of tab in the contact.

But when i send emails to the group, everyone receives the email expect for the external address.

can someone please tell me what i'm doing wrong? SMTP relay is prevented on the exchange, and we're running Exchange 2003.

thanks

Tony

I'm not quite sure what you have misconfigured here.

Question - can you email to these contacts, outside of emailing to the distribution list?

I have this setup in my environment. I have some contacts going to a hotmail account. I have a Universal distribution group setup, with multiple recipients...both internal and external.

Does the distribution list have an exchange account?

Hope This Helps,

Good Luck!

hi monsterjta

thanks for the quick reply.

we can definitely email the contacts directly. And if we put a forwarding on one of the user's AD account to the external contact, it will work. The minute i put the contact into a distribution list, nothing.

The distribution list does have it's own email address. Would preventing SMTP relay cause this to happen?

thanks

Tony

Try configuring the group as a Universal Distribution Group.

Hope This Helps,

Good Luck!

How did that work out for you, Chronos? Did making the group a Universal Distribution Group help? From my understanding, if you are configuring a distribution group to contain multiple domain accounts then it needs to be universal.

Hope This Helps,

Good Luck!

hey monsterjta - works fine now!

but do you know what the security implications of making the distribution list a Universal Group are?

thanks!

Tony

From what I know, a Universal Distribution Group is simply an enhancement from Mixed Mode domains and is only available in Native Mode. Basically, it enables the use of adding members from one domain into a group in another. Also, there are really no security implications in a distribution group anyways...as they can not be used for security related implementations (ie: NTFS permissions).

Glad to hear you got it working. Thanks for the feedback.
