I am working on a database for someone, and I need to be able to send the secured database (along with the workgroup file) on a CD to them. The problem is the shortcut created by the Security Wizard points to the paths on my PC, but the paths are not going to be the same on their PC. Is there an easy way to create an installable database that will create the shortcut to the proper path to the secured database and workgroup file on the clients PC?

How about creating a batch file that the user will run to install the database. In this batch file you will create the directory the files need to go into and then copy the db into those folder and then you can also copy a shortcut to the all users desktop folder.

Just a very simple solution I have used in the past.

Thanks, that sounds like a good idea. One other problem I ran into in trying to zip the database, workgroup file and shortcut so I could e-mail it, is zipping the shortcut. Since the short cut points to the access.exe file in order to run the database, it zips the access.exe file instead of the shortcut!

If you were to create a folder called MyDB and then set it up the way you want to with short cut pointing to the proper exe and stuff and then using WinZip you can zip up that folder and then create an EXE of the zipped file where you can tell it to unzip it in that folder and you can even have Winzip lanuch the batch file to copy the shortcut to the user's desktop.

But as far as what you are saying wouldn't make sense since Winzip will zip up what you want to as I have never has any problem zipping up shortcuts. Recheck your zippind process as you might be including the exe instead of the shortcut. Without anymore info this is the only thing I can think of.

If you have the Developers' Toolkit then I'd recommend using the Package & Deployment wizard.

It'll batch the files up into an installation executable and sort out the shortcuts and Start Menu icons when they install.

BTW - If you're zipping to decrease size I think you're wasting your time. I don't think WinZip will decrease the file size of Access databases.

That's what I need. I don't have the developers' Toolkit, but I'll look for it on the Microsoft website. The reason I was trying to zip it is so it will e-mail to a MSN e-mail address. MSN blocks the database attachment.

I think MSN will block any executable attachment. It's Microsoft's sledgehammer approach to preventing the spread of viruses.

I can't seem to find the Developers Toolkit for Access 2000 on the Microsoft site, any ideas where I can get it?
