I've been trying to get disinguish media by name only to work on our backups, we have four tapes with the same name and different id's. From what i understand is that arcserve should backup to any media with the same name and any id with this option selected, is this correct?

If not how can i get this to work, any ideas?

Were running V11.1 on Win2000 server and the tape drive is a Dell PV132T tape libary.

This is the log from the job, if it helps

To be honest I have never used or understood what this option actually does.

What would be the best way to set the backups with out this option, Media pools or groups?

It depends on how you have setup your job - if you are running a custom repeat job you specify the overwrite or append criteria in global options under backup media. If you are using ANY type of rotation then the settings in Global options/backup media do not apply, and in this case you set the append/overwrite criteria in the schedule tab of the backup job.

You can still use the option the way you originally planned.
The setting "distinguish media by name only" is meant to allow you to use the four tapes with the same name and different id's in a single job and combine this with the "overwrite same media name or blank media" option.
However this setting is on a one-job base only (if you use this setting in a scheduled job and modify it you will see that the setting is gone).
You can overcome simply this by filling in manually the desired media name in the destination option and not selecting it from the available media. This way the media name is preserved in the job along with a 0000 random id and the job will accept any media with the name specified in the destination tab.
Hope I'm clear
