Hi there I’m looking for some advice regarding a dissimilar H/W restore.

I’m trying to restore a vista installation after replacing the motherboard with a slightly different one (Different Chipset)

After installing it wouldn't boot past crcdisk.sys so I have so tried a few things to solve issue:

1. Safe mode / Repairing from Vista boot disk.
2. Using Acronis pluspack to attempt to restore to dissimilar hardware.

I’ve managed to get the acronis image to restores to Virtual Machine and the boot from that, which works fine.

I’ve started rebuilding from scratch and have a windows.old directory, though it seems silly that I can't get this machine working with the original image!

Any suggestions???

A couple of things to look at.

The method to perform a Repair Install is outlined in this thread. Just make sure you are repairing the correct ServicePack version with any repair media that you use. Good idea to make a backup of the whole partition first.

Have you tried running it out of the Windows environment? If you have an install DVD that you can boot to (or a Startup Repair option via the F8 Safe Mode screen), try launching the Command Prompt from the options provided when you go down the Startup Repair path.

Do not perform the Startup Repair, just look for, and go to the option for the Command Prompt (from the Choose a Recovery Tool dialog), and try running Chkdsk C: /r from within that.

Most of those options require a system that already boots.

The rest don't seem relevent.

I gave up and rebuilt the machine but thanks for the reply...

Apple is much more straightforward :-0

A little late, I know, but Acronis' Universal Restore does wonders for such circumstances. I've used this addition to its True Image companion many times, going from platform to platform, including Intel to Intel, AMD to Intel and vice-versa.

Hi thanks for the reply. I did try the universal restore feauture, but on this occasion it didn't work :-( I did get it to boot from a virtual machine though, but gave up persuing in the end.

Given it was the first time I used universal restore I was dissapointed but I have used it again since on other machines and found that it actually works well.

At least you didn't give up on it. I've only had it not work twice, once quite a few years ago with some old SCSI systems, and surprisingly, when trying to migrate from an Intel platform to an Intel platform. So, it's not perfec, but for disaster recovery purposes, it can't be beat.
