I have Windows XP Professional SP2.
The welcome screen displays the user name and after I click on it, then it displays the password field.
How to make the welcome screen to display the password field automatically, without clicking on the user name ?

Thanks in advance

You would need to go into Control Panel>User Accounts and disable Fast User Switching.

That will prompt you will a username/password box automatically

You can also accomplish this using the Group Policy Editor. Go to Start >Run >type gpedit.msc and hit 'Enter'. When the Group Policy Editor opens, navigate to the following:

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Logon

Find and enable the setting: "Always use classic logon"

I disabled the Fast User Switching.
But it didn't made password field to display automatically.

IllogicallyLogical:

THis disables the XP Welcome screen.
I don't want that.
I want the password field to be displayed automatically in the Welcome Screen.

Any Suggesstions ???

From MS.

To Enable or Disable the CTRL+ALT+DELETE Sequence

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts.

Click the Advanced tab.

In the Secure logon section, select or clear the Require users to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete check box.

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

Ctrl+Alt+Delete check box is already unchecked for me.

Thanks in advance

Are you running in a AD domain structure?

If you're not do you want to bypass entering a password entirely? You can still secure the pc but what it does mean is that whenever the machine is reset it would automatically log in but when a screen saver is activated for instance it would prompt for a password.

If you're happy with that scenario then do a google for tweakui and download it from MS (it's an MS Powertoy), in tweakui you have the ability to use autologin.

I have used tweakui. I don't want to use Autologin.

I just want the passward field to display automatically, without clicking on the user name. I used to have this feature enabled earlier. But I did a clean re-install of XP recently. Since then the Welcome screen, only displays the user name. I have to click on the user name to get the password field displayed.

Is there any way I can make the password field on the Welcome screen to be displayed automatically, without clicking on the user name.

Thanks in advance

If there's only 1 user account, the password field should immediately be active/focused. Are there multiple user accounts?

I have only one account.
I tried the options given in the link. But no use.

I had the same version of ServicePack i.e SP2, prior to re-install too.

Thanks in advance

If you want to experiment with the Registry, you could try some of the MSKB articles about setting up Auto Login (or TweakUI) but leave out entering any Password (in the Registry) and see what happens? Maybe it will just interpret it as being a blank Password, or maybe it will open the Password box for you to enter your Password? If it just logs you on automatically with a blank Password, you could try changing your Password from blank and see if that leaves you at your desired position?

Try the following:

Open Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Local Security Policy
Double click "Local Policies", then click "Security Options"
Right click "Accounts: Guest account status", click "Properties", then set Guest account status to "disabled" and click "Apply" and "OK"

The password field should now be automatically displayed against your user id on the Welcome Screen.
