I am running RedHat 9. I have an ATI Rage Mobility video card. When I go into the display settings I see that the resolution is set to 800x600. I can change the resolution to 1024x768 and it tells me that I must logout and restart X Serve before settings will take affect. So, I logout and restart the machine only to find that the resolution has not changed and is still set to 800x600. How do I restart X Serve or maybe I need to change the driver that Redhat is using for my monitor?

Rebooting will restart the X server, I think it will restart if you logout and then back in again.
Can you post your /etc/XF86Config file? That's probably a good place to start.

press ctrl+alt+ the plus or minus sign. then log out. that should restart the server. if it doesn't, switch to runlevel 3.

Make sure you set up the horizontal and vertical sync of your monitor properly...

Are you sure your monitor supports 1024x768 ?

Redhat's probe will sometimes give 1024 and 1280 even when your monitor can't support it.

First check to see if your monitor can support 1024, go to the vendor's website, or use your manual. If that doesn't work, post your XF86Config file here.

Thanks everyone. I went into display properties and saw that RedHat had selected as default an "unknown montior". So, since I have a laptop I changed it to "Generic Laptop 1024x768" and WALAH! I was able to adjust my screen size from there. Thanks, again!
