Display problems - monitor or graphics card?

Something weird happened to my display recently - after the computer woke up from hibernation the screen had a red cast to it - I can still see everything all right, it's just that now everything is red! I'm not sure whether it is my graphics card or my monitor causing the problem ... the monitor preferences menu (to change the width, height, geometry, etc.) still shows with normal colours, so could this mean that it's my graphics card causing the problem?

Hibernation issues? What's it like after a re-boot? If still red - check your monitor gamma settings, something may have changed them. Look in your display properties, advanced. The place you set monitor gamma varies from machine to machine. Not all screen drivers allow you to set gamma!

My CRT also does this. Some mornings my monitor has a rainbow-like effect around the edges of the screen. Degaussing it seems to clear this up, but in my case it's definitely a monitor issue.

It's the art of deduction..
Try hooking your monitor up to a different system to see if the problem persists. If it does, then it's time for a new monitor.

If not, try either putting a different graphics card in, or take your current one & test it in a different system.

Hope this helps you.

The monitor is now showing permenantly red, after reboot, everything. Unfortunately I don't have extra monitors / graphics cards (otherwise I would have tried that!) ... I just wanted to know if anyone had suffered similar problems. If not, I'll have to try to source another monitor to try swapping it.

Either could cause a colour cast (graphics card or the monitor itself)
Simplist thing would be to hook the monitor up to another PC, if the cast dissapears it's the graphics, if not then the monitor is faulty.

Agreed. You can check all of the connections and move the VGA cable around to rule that out; that aside the only way to know for sure if to replace one of the devices.

Russell.
