I've been having problems getting my display area on the desktop settings to a usable size since I used safe mode for something. If I remove the video card drivers and reboot the screen will go back to the standard size once the drivers are updated. However this only works until I reboot the computer.
Basically to have a standard size display area I need to remove the video driver every time I restart the computer and have windows reinstall it. I went back to the original drivers that came on the installation disk in case the ones on the computer had degraded somehow and the same thing happens. There are no updated drivers other than the ones I am using.

Is this a hardware problem with my video card? If not any ideas?

Right click on the desktop, choose properties. Then choose the Setting tab. change colors to 16 bit High color and slide the screen area to the desired screen size, usually 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768, then apply and re-start your computer. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

I don't think I was clear. This is exactly what I can't do. The screen will not slide at all and is stuck on 480 x 600. When I remove the video driver the screen will go to 600 x 800 which is somewhat better. Changing the color to 250 or anything else does not impact the slide at all. Right clicking on desktop or using control panel to change the display gives me the option of changing the color but the area display slide does not work. It has in the past and prior to this "stuckness" I had it set to 1024 x 768. That last size no longer exists as an option at all. It is currently set on 16 bit high color with the 480x600 size and an unmoveable slide.

How about your monitor driver. Check in device manager to see if there are any conflicts. See what is under Monitors.
You might try removing it and re-starting and let it reload.
you have re-installed your display adapter drivers and that didn't fix it, it could be a problem with the monitor drivers. Just a thought. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

Try this:
1- uninstall the Video card programmes.
2- restart in safe mode. Remove all the drivers under Display adapters in Device Manager.
3- Restart in normal mode. If your OS recognizes the new hardware (vid card) and wants to install its drivers, cancel it.
4- Use the software provided by the video card manufacturer to install it.

Good luck

Thanks- the last 2 suggestions together worked. I never had a driver for my very old driver. I found 1 online as well as the driver for my video card and did what you suggested. It seems to be working again.
