Hi

I am planning an upgrade from Solaris 2.6 to solaris 8.

I have read sun document "Upgrade Tips and Checklist" which mentions DiskSuite needs to be disabled prior to O/S upgrade.

We have Solstice DiskSuite 4.1 installed.

Q
1. What is this used for
2. How do I dissable it
3. Will this need upgrading to work with Solaris 8. If so How!

Sorry about all the Questions but i am a novice!

Kind Regards

Simon

Disk Suite is disk management software. It allows disks to be set up with software mirroring, striping, and some other stuff. You'll know if your using it from the output of "df -k" as well as "metastat -a". if df -k shows any device starting out as "/dev/md/..." your using it. Just as well, if the "metastat" command shows anything, your using it. You might also take a look at your /etc/vfstab, to see if there are any entries for /dev/md in there. One other thing, just take a look in the /dev directory to see if there is a /md sub-directory. If your using it, post again and we'll take a look at "disabling" it for the upgrade.

You'll also need to upgrade the DiskSuite software to v4.2.1 as this is the only verison supported on Solaris 8.

The DiskSuite 4.2.1 Installation guide tells you how to go about the whole task.

thanks for reply!!!

yes we are using it. any clues on disabling it!!

thanks in advance....

Read through the DiskSuite documentation from docs.sun.com (I downloaded the PDF) to get a good understanding of how to go about un-mirroring the filesystem.

Dear Simon,

Please follow following instruction to disable Online Disksuite
1. #> pkginfo | grep –I sunwmd
(Output will be )
system SUNWmd Solstice DiskSuite
system SUNWmdg Solstice DiskSuite Tool
system SUNWmdn Solstice DiskSuite Log Daemon

(Remove above packages by using pkgrm)
2. #> pkgrm SUNWmd SUNWmdg SUNWmdn

You can also use admintool to remove the same.

Before you remove any packages, you must stop the system trying to use it.

1. The first thing you need to do is to edit the /etc/system file and put a * in front of the rootdev and md:mddb_bootlist lines.

2. Secondly you need to go to underlying devices on both nodes. This means editing the /etc/vfstab file to use the underlying devices rather than the metadevices.

You can see what the underlying devices are by printing out a copy of metastat -p.
In the case of / this means the vfstab should look as follows...(obviously you must use the correct devices for you system.

/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0 /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s0 / ufs 1 no -

Change the other entries for swap, /usr/, /var, /export/home and /opt in the
same way.

Comment out any other remaining filesystems.

You should take a copy of metastat -p and save this in a file or make sure
that the file /etc/opt/SUNWmd/md.tab is upto date and reflects all the
metadevice which you have set up.

3. Reboot , it should come up with all filesystem on the underlying
devices and no metasets or metadevices configured.

Then you can run the Solaris 8 upgrade, and also upgrade to SDS 4.2.1 as mentioned earlier in this thread.

Hi

Thanks to all of you for the reply!! and sorry for the delay!!

ok. we have disksuite 4.1 installed and we wish to upgrade to solaris 8.

am i correct in saying that i :-

* rem out the lines mentioned in /etc/system and revert back to the underlying devices

* then carry out the upgrade from 2.6 to 8

* upgrade disksuite

* unrem /etc/system devices

-- noted mentioned earlier about using pkgrm to remove SUNWmdg packages. Am i correct in saying that i do not wish to do this as it will remove disk suite, because all i wish to do is dissable it.

Any advice/help will be greatly appreciated :)
