Hey guys,

I have a hardware-based RAID 5 array that we need to extend. I added a new disk and used the RAID 5 manager software to "extend" the array. That all went well. Now the problem is that in Windows, I see my disk, and I see a large block of unallocated space next to it that I wish to roll into the volume. The disk is a basic disk, and I don't necessarily want to upgrade to a dynamic disk.

According to Microsoft, I should be able to use the diskpart tool to extend the volume into the free space located on the drive. When I use diskpart, I get the "diskpart failed to extend the drive. Please make sure the drive is valid for extending" error message. I'm not sure why I'm getting this message, as I'm pretty sure I meet all of the requirements for extending the disk.

Anybody out there with some expertise as to why this could be happening to me? It would be much appreciated. Thanks!!

You will get this message if the partition that you are trying to extend is a system or boot partition, or it contains a swap/page file.

Thanks, ferrin, but the disk isn't system/boot and it doesn't contain a swap file. It's a pure data volume with no system files on it.
