Hi, my system running on WinME crashed after scandisk found some problems, now it won't boot and all it says is "Disk I/O error"..does not boot even from a boot disk...any suggestions? thanks thanks!
Sounds like your disk may be toast.
Do you know the make and model ? If not, open your PC to find out. Then go to the makers web site and download the diagnostic tools for that disk. Normally, all hard disk makers have such tools available publicly.
That tool will be able to tell you if your disk is good for the trash or not.
If it is not the disk, it could be the cable, or the motherboard. As for the cable, if you never move your PC I don't know how it could suddenly break down, so that would leave the motherboard.
If it won't even boot from a boot disk, re-set the bios for a starter. Next, in bios, uncheck "stop on all errors", this will allow the unit to boot to the floppy even if the hard drive is bad. Now you can start trouble shooting.
Thanks Guys...I tried everything and the consensus is that I need a new hard drive, which I am ok with..but what I am not ok with is, if this would mean having to buy new operating system and new MS office..boy they are expensive..they had come pre loaded with my machine, no separate CDs that I remember and the recovery CD that came with it has been lost...do I have any hope?
OK, so you lost the only copy of what you needed to reinstall. Do you still have the license ? If so, you might be able to argue with Microsoft and get them to give you a new disk, since you have the license.
If you really have nothing, your options are rather reduced. You can either ask your friends if they can loan you a disk (not very legal), buy a new license, or think about getting a version of Linux and StarOffice.
