I am going to duck before I say this too loudly. Do those of you in the USA remember the protests against import cars because of the jobs that were lost at the U.S. Steel mills? Well, it occurred to me that there is a high potential that we here at Tek-Tips are providing help and solutions to the very same folks that have those offshore jobs we have been discussing lately.

Example:
I might have gotten a particular job, but it was sent overseas. "Mohan" gets this cheap labor job in his country.

"Mohan" needs help and posts the question on a thread here at TT.

I answer "Mohan's" question. He is now successful in his job, helping to insure he keeps his job.

Questions
Do you help under this circumstance? How do we maintain our professional integrity and help those that need it, if we suspect we may be hurting ourselves?

Please be kind. I answer all questions I am qualified to answer without regard to the apparent nationality of the poster.

Knowledge is convertible into power...
But knowledge itself is not Power. Wisdom is Power.

Albert Pike

Wisdom is perishable. Unlike information or knowledge, it cannot be stored in a computer or recorded in a book.
It expires with each passing generation.

I think selflessly might be the word you're reaching for. [wink]

OK, sometimes there are things you just can't share. But in the main, if you're open with people, they will respond. And , as you say, if people know the bigger picture, they make better decisions.

In my experience, those who hoard knowledge are often the least capable and are scared of being out-shone, they rarely end up looking good. Especially when someone in their group makes a bad decision based on incomplete knowledge.

In contrast, those who share knowledge usually get get the credit they deserve, and if they are managing staff, end up with a better motivated and extremely loyal team.

(Besides, if you don't share knowledge, you have to do all the work. If you do share it, other people can take a chunk of the work and you still get credit for the team performance. But maybe I'm just lazy.)

Gotta agree on sharing knowledge. Usually only the insecure hoard knowledge. Mostly so others don't find out how little they really know, I think, or just becasue they are on some power kick. I have never been harmed from sharing knowledge with subordinates and they are more likely to respect the knowledge you cannot share if you are normally open.
