I have a question about replacing a 406V2 with a IP500 in cases of product failure. The 406V2 has VCM card(4,8,16), a T1 card and a ATM4U card, also interested if the dongle from the 406 can hang on the IP500. The dongle is a serial dongle if that make a difference. Do I need to use multiple legacy card carriers or can I use upgraded IP500 cards and convert the programming to the IP500?

You can only have 2 legacy cards per ipo.

database can be put into the IP500 might need to play a little with it afterwards.

Serial dongle no good for IP500, needs to get a smart card for the 500 and get your BP to transfer the licenses and then send the serial key back.

So in your oppion what is the quickest way to get the customer back up, hold on to an out dated 406V2 just in case? Or should we look at a new IP500 and some down time?

Depends what licenses there are, It will take some time to turn the licenses around onto the new key.

We have a few 406's kicking about, just in case.

But you wont be able to get all three cards onto the ip500 so you are going to have to compromise somewhere.

Even if you do have the licenses you are going to also add a phone 2 and a DS8 to the 500 to replace the built in extns on the 406 (assuming they are using them). If you do that and add the Trunk cards, you have no way of getting VCM's onto the system.

So best bet would probably be replace the Alog trunk card (cheapest) for an ip500 trunk card which can sit on the DS8. Then put the VCM and PRI into the legacy carriers.

Thats a lot of kit to have kicking about "just in case"

Depending on what they are doing it could incur extra costs also, e.g if they are using VM Pro or IP trunks etc you need extra licences for those to work on an IP500

This is a 7 location SCN with advanced networking and full T1 capacity so it is loaded, I had thought about the lisences and wasn't sure which ones would need to be added for the IP500 to work in place of the 406. I know that the VCM lisences are needed but not sure what else is needed or transferable.

well if you put the 400 VCM card on a legacy carrier you wont need VCM licenses.

The advanced networking should transfer but you will also need and upgrade to proffesional for the 500?

You would also need the voice networking licences it comes with 4 ports enabled (4 outgoing) and you buy additional ports if needed also upgrade to Pro licence if you have exapansion modules or use this site as the VM one for the SCN, the VCM licences are only needed for the VCM32 or 64 IP500 cards not the older one with a legacy carrier

Maybe time to look at upgrading to a 500 for the running kit and then just need a spare 500 chassis/ip 500 cards.

Or just keep a 406 in a cupboard and some daughter cards.

yeah i was thinking that.

This isnt the kind of thing you want to be doing under pressure when everythig has gone wrong.

Thanks that is what I was thinking now after all this. Just carry a spare 406

swapping a 406 for a 406 will take ten minutes max.

just keep it on the right firmware and make sure you have a backup of the config.

Just make sure you have some labels to wrap around the patch leads, as I have yet to see an up to date set of patching records on a customers site ;-)
