Disaster Recovery of Domain Controllers

I recently performed a Disaster Recovery test of my 2 domain controllers (in a remote closed network). I restore both domain controllers without any problem. My only hitch was that neither server could find the global catalog server (although 1 of them was the global catalog server). DNS was running on both servers and pointing to each other. I eventually had to create a host file on each server in order for each DC to see the glovbal catalog.
Could there have been some cached DNS entries for both these DC's (coming from the production environment) that caused my problem? How can I get rid of ALL cached DNS entries and start DNS with a clean slate?
