disappearing "memos" file

For no apparent reason, all the data in my memo files just came disappeared. The file name still appears on the top--"c:\program files\starfish\sidekick98\userdata\memos"--and the folder names appear, but the individual topics are blank. When I run "open file" there's nothing called just "memos" as in the name about. There is a file called "memos.SKWrite" but nothing appears when I open it.

The memos data were on my Palm Pilot (did a sync just yesterday), but when I ran the sync this time, with the Palm overwriting SK, I got an error message that "Sidekick Write file could not be opened" so the data did not transfer.

If it means anything, the time signature on the memos file I opened corresponds to the time of yesterday's sync. Also, I've restored the userdata file from my weekly backup, and restored the computer to where it was on Dec. 6. All to no avail.

Dear Rahamim,
Sounds bad, first have you tried exporting the Memos to a .rtf file from Memo View, Alt|Memo|Export and then choose All.
Then you might keep the Data even if you don't keep the formatting if there is anything there.

Jim,
Your directions seem to assume that the data are in a Sidekick file. But those files are empty, except for folder labels--which are already activated.

If you're saying to export out of Palm Pilot (which is where all the data are), I don't know how to do that, following your steps. I did try, in the Pilot configuration, to change the receiver for the Pilot Write data by using "browse" and selecting the "memos.SKWrite" file. Then when I click on "open," I return to the configuration page, but the path for the receiving data hasn't changed.

Your opening words are ominous. Is it time to think about reinstalling the program?

Dear Rahamim,
The only file on the computer that has the data in it for the write file is the file:
c:\program files\starfish\sidekick98\userdata\memos.SKContent.
The only alternative is to open that file in Wordpad and save it as a text file and if there is anything in it that is important you have at least saved that.
The option after that is to open a new write file and call it Recovery and then delete or move the old memo file and then rename or Save as the recovery cardfile as
Memo and then synch to that from the Palm...
Backup the original file before you do any of the above.

Jim,
I went to the field you suggested (memos.SKContent) and opened it with Notepad. It contains just two words, the first two words of the first file in the first folder. So that's all there is in SK.

However, all the data that was in SK is still on the Pilot from a prior sync. My problem is getting it back into SK--either directly by syncing (but that fails because Pilot cannot find a file in SK that it calls "Write" and is where the memo data goes) or by accessing the Pilot file directly--except I don't know how to do that.

So the issue is not so much in SK, where the appropriate file got cleaned out, but with finding a way to get that data transferred from Pilot back to SK.

Dearn rahamim,
The second part of my previous post contained the answer to your last statement:
Your last statement:
"the issue is not so much in SK, where the appropriate file got cleaned out, but with finding a way to get that data transferred from Pilot back to SK."
My answer:
"The option after that is to open a new write file (File|New Memo File) & then save the Memo File (call it Recovery or whatever)

Then synch to that file from the Palm..."
