Disappearing files in Dreamweaver 8

I have a problem with disappearing files when using Dreamweaver 8. I have been using DW 8 steadily for four years with no problems, but recently it has developed a behavior of suddenly and intermittently deleting html files when I switch to view the file with another program, like Firefox. First I see a not found error in the browser. I can still see the file in DW. If at that point I refresh my Windows Vista file management window, the file disappears there as well, and it does NOT appear in the recycle bin. My only solution has been to immediately go to DW and re-save the file. But sometimes it happens without me being aware, and I have lost major work for no apparent reason. Maybe this is Adobe's way of telling me I need to upgrade to CS4? I hope not! Any solutions?

Update: I have narrowed down this behavior to files that disappear after I try to save a file in Dreamweaver. When I try to save and get a message saying "Access denied", I can no longer open the file. I have to hit F5 (refresh) in Windows and watch the file disappear before I can save the file. If I then close the DW tab without saving it, bye-bye file!

Also, I noticed my CPU usage is 100% when this happens. I isolated prevhost.exe as the most consuming process at the time. I have turned off the "Preview Pane" in Windows Vista. Maybe that will help. We'll see. Any thoughts?
