Disappearing Act in Illustrator

Using CS3 Illustrator, often when I create a path, even a line segment, when I try to create a second line segment or path, the first one I drew disappears. What am I doing wrong?

...press command/control+Y, do you have black outlines appearing?

...if so, your line actually needs a stroke color...
