Have come across a thread elsewhere that does not quite give me an answer. Any other ideas?
Q. We have 12 laptops in use across our school LAN. I usually call them in during the summer for general checking etc. Big holiday this year so will not be about. Can I block/refuse connection to network of laptops not handed back in, next September when staff come back?
Laptops are XP Pro and Network NT4 server - It would be the laptop and not the user I would want to block. Thanks in advance.

You could remove them from the domain that way its a quick job to readd them.

Thanks Spirit,
In Server Manager the laptops are all listed. Would it be right to remove them from the domain here and would I expect any problems when re-joining domain. This seems a very easy and "brutal" way of getting what I want, but needs must! I have a float laptop which I can try.

Yup, Test test test!

As I understand it there shouldn't be any issues. But you will have to make sure you delete the name from server manager otherwise when you attempt to rejoin the domain you'll get name already exists. You may have issues with people's user profiles if they're held on the laptop.

Can you disable the user account instead? This would be a bit less brutal and is a quick tick box solution.

Good Luck,
Iain

This is what I have done:
In Server Manager - Removed from domain, so far so good exactly what I wanted.
In Server Manager - Add to domain, Laptop back in list but could not logon. Maybe too impatient, network needs time to update?
However always looking for the quickest method, at the laptop I removed from domain/added to workgroup/restarted - added to domain/restarted and all is well.
Maybe not an orthodox method but successful.

Re: Can you disable the user account instead?
As the users use the school network PC's also I want to leave their accounts intact. I only want to target the laptops. Fingers crossed looking good!!

Speed things up a little?

In server manager select your PDC (Highlight it) - Computer - Syncronise Domain. (Works for User Accounts and other things too).

Have you tried adding laptop back in with a different name? Old name Laptop1, new name Laptop1b.
