How do I disable winzip support in XP pro? I know you can unregister the DLL using;

regsvr32 /u %windir\system32\zipfldr.dll

however this does not work as after a restart the machine will continue to unzip files. The solution above merely allows the use of 3rd party compression utilities such as Winzip. I have also tried removing the DLL however XP simply recreates it.

I am trying to prevent users opening potentially harmful .zip file containing viruses. There are a number in circulation at present.

Thanks

Ross

I have done this before.. and it works with a little bit of complaining.

run the unregister command:
regsvr32 /u %windir\system32\zipfldr.dll

now.. before you reboot.. do a search on your C: drive for zipfldr.dll. search hidden/system files, you should have at least 2 hits. DELETE ALL FILES that come up. Windows File Protection will complain, just cancel it, do NOT let it replace the files.

Reboot.

That's it.

I don't know, sure sounds like you are trying to do too much. As someone once wrote "nothing is fool proof because fools are so clever"

I mean, you don't have an anti-virus scanner that scans all incoming attachments?

If things are this bad at your office, best policy would be to eliminate computers all together and go back to stone tablets and chisels.

I mean, you start stripping good functionality out of the PC, it becomes less useful and hence more cumbersome to use and productivity will only go down.

Just some thoughts.

Also
You can selectively restrict access to few apps and file names. To do this, open registry by going to START-RUN and entering regedit. Navigate to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \Policies\Explorer] and a sub-key by the name "DisallowRun". Within this key, add as many string keys as you like, each mapped to an application or file that you want to be restricted.

compgirlfhredi,

You would have to restrict rundll32, and that is a decidedly not good idea.

I'd have to strongly agree with edemiere here; running active virus scanning software seems like the better choice, lest you get down to preventing the running of any executable file or office document or any sort of internet connection.
