disabling modem on hold utility in XP Home 1

Does anyone know how to disable the modem on hold utility in XP home edition? I have call waiting turned off on my internet line but every so often the computer "rings" tells me that my ISP doesn't support modem on hold and cuts me off! I figure disabling the utility will allow the computer to ignore any incoming calls as the caller will just get an engaged signal and my connection will not be disturbed.

If I understand your question correctly you have the caller waiting feature on your land line, so that if you are on the phone it will make a noise to indicate that someone else is trying to get through to you.

If this is the case there is a way for XP to disable this feature, however you will first need to speak to your call provider and ask them for the number required to disable this feature.

Then do the following on your computer.

1. Click on Start > Programs > Acessories > Communications > Network Connections.

2. Right Click on your Connection and click properties.

3. Tick the Use Dialing Rules box if it is not already ticked.

4. Click on the Dialing Rules Button.

5. If there is not a Dialing Rules Set already you will need to create a new one.

6. Either when creating a new one or editing your existing one there is a setting for Disabling Call waiting.

7. Tick this box and then enter the number that you have obtained from your Call provider.

Thanks for the reply but no, my problem is a little more complicated than that. I have already turned off call waiting using the instructions provided by my telephone service provider, so the landline should not pass anything to the computer via the modem...but somehow the computer is registering, via the modem on hold utility is my guess, that a call is coming in. As I've been informed by a reliable source, that the caller on hold facility is not supported by my telephone service provider, the modem on hold utility just drops the line. I'm hoping that disabling the utility will prevent the disconnections.

Ok if it is the Modem on Hold feature that you want to disable this depends on whether or not your modem manufacturer has given you the ability to disable this feature. This would normall be done through software that the manufacturer supplies with the modem.

If you are unsure of this if you supply us with the make and model of your modem we can attempt to find the correct settings.

Thanks for the help...the modem was supplied with the PC - its an ESS Technologies ES56H-PI data/fax/voice modem but I have no software for it...
I may do a search for software myself as well. There just doesn't seem to be any setting to disable the moh utility. Damn, it just dropped the line again!

Take a look at

They both show you how to disable the V.90 capabilities of your modem. It is these capabilities that include the MOH. However you may experience a drop in connection speed so you will have to monitor this.

Also try downloading the latest drivers from ftp://ftp.esstech.com/pub/modem/pci/ES2898ES2818/XP/ES2898_XP_V052_Sign.zip as they may contain a fix to the problem you are experiencing.

Thanks Greg...again! Will follow up sites, have already lodged a query with ESS Tech support. I wish I could get help from palmOne about my handheld as fast as this! Surprised others in Australia haven't complained about this issue as I'm told our major comms provider (fixed line network) doesn't support m-o-h.
