Folks,

Where I work, there's a disabled parking slot, right outside the front door, for obvious reasons.

It's got a 'deliveries' slot right next to it, for equally obvious reasons.

Some of the 'managers' have taken to parking in the disabled bay, even when there are plenty of other spaces available.

I've objected to this through the appropriate channels, and a 'quiet word' has been had with the individuals responsible. However, these special people resumed their anti-social parking the next day. I am not letting this go, and it's been escalated to the CEO, who is due to take action shortly.

What bugs me, is the mentality of these people. Their convenience comes before the genuine need of the disabled. They'll say "Nobody disabled works here" or some such, but what they're really doing is breaking a minor rule and getting away with it, because in their puerile little consciousness, they're important. This is a subset of "If I can break one little rule, then why not two?", which is a subset of "The rules don't apply to me" and you can take it from there.

Does anyone out there have any similar experiences with such dweebs in the office, and if yes, how did you deal with them?

Thank you for that post. My Mother has Meniere's Syndrome and I have been trying to get her to get a sticker for her own safety but she says there are more handicaped people out there than her. But I guess I can't say anything since I have Uclertive Colitis and I to show no outward signs of being handicapped and was offered a sticker but did not take it.

Stella,
If you need it, take it. After all, you only need to park in the handicap space when a bad day hits.

I have several bad discs in my low back, surgical pins in my ankle, arthritis and ... well you get the idea. On a good day most folks might not notice anything amiss. However, I would love to have a sticker to be used on the horrible days.

Side Note:
I sometimes get funny looks from others in the restroom because I need to use the handicap stall for the railings to get up and down safely. But to the untrained eye I don't look handicapped, whatever that is. I do not expect anyone else to "hold it" when that is the only stall available. But, it would be nice if those that do not need it would leave it open for those that do.

Stella001,

I feel your pain. I am a severe Crohn's patient and all I can say is when I get the "urge" having a closer parking space would be a wonderful thing. Though I've never been offered a handicap parking sticker, I wouldn't take it either, as I know my issue can be overcome with a shower and change of clothes, whereas the pain some people, or extent of their ability to be mobile would surpass my condition.

As far as handicap restrooms, I do agree, if there is another stall open, I will use it, but with Crohn's, whatever is avaliable is where I head for.

For those who don't have UC/Crohn's, just for an understanding, imagine having the runs all the time. You get a feeling and have VERY little time to react.

I prefer regular restroom stalls for myself, but just have to use handicap stalls when I take my young child to the bathroom. Those regular stalls, with the doors opening inwards, are just not designed to fit a mother with a kid. So far I didn't get the looks - but, on the other hand, other people use any available stall when there is no person with a visible handicap around.

No, no, no, I'm not wishing to make negative comments about those who have stickers who need them for reasons that aren't visible at first glance. My problem is with people who absolutely do not need them (because Aunty stayed at home today) and yet still block the limited number of spaces available for the genuinely needy. My main gripe is the "young children" spots at local supermarkets. By all means if you've got a baby/toddler and push-chair you need a bit more space round the car doors. But if your children are now over ten, do they still justify using the young-children spot?

I knew a gentleman who, for perfectly valid medical reasons, could see very well when he was sitting down but had very poor eyesight when he stood up. He was still allowed to drive, but would get out of the driver's door and unfold his white stick...

OK, moan over. Thanks for not holding it against me.

POLICE. period. It is the DMV act for disabled, public or private, unless it's their personal property, like a home. Even then, if it's noted to township/state as business, police can still ticket/tow.

Better yet hire someone who is disabled and needs the spot.
