After installing Windows XP Professional and updated it, the Control panel Automatic update option is greyed out and I cannot disable automatic updates. Is there a registry setting which I can change to disable automatic updates - as well as repossess the control?

Win2000P/Acc2000 - It's best to stay with products that work.

Dont know if this will stop automatic updates but in the Group Policy you can disable links and all access to Windows Update

well, if you are running SP2, it can be controlled via group policy, services, and security center. Have you tried any of the others?

If it is running as a service, all you should have to do is disable the wuauserv service. You could also look into your grou policies at :

gpedit.msc > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update

REGSVR32 wups.dll

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in Windows XP

Hi,
You might find the information at this link helpful, too:

As far as I understand it, going to: Control Panel --> Adminstrative Tools --> Services, gives one access to the necessary levers of power.

Doubleclick "Automatic Updates," in the list of services, change Startup Type to "Disabled, " click on "Stop" if it's currently running, then "Apply" and "OK."

That should get the point across.
