On my second PC I downloaded DirectX 8.1 from Windows website for Windows Me (thats the correct OS on that system) and I went through the install it asked me if I wish to reboot so I hit yes and when it rebooted it was stuck on the slash screen for win me. I hit ctrl, alt & del and it reboot the system up to the same point. I hit esc and I see some odd error saying:

"Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2
%1: %2"

I tried to start in safe mode with no luck, then used a boot disk to get me loaded. I am in DOS now, I am not sure what to do at this point to fix the problem, or narrow down what it might be. Any help or ideas are appreciated.

Thanks,
Ray

Ok, here is the skinny. Speaking with a friend of mine he told me its probably a bad kernal (whats that, one of those pieces of pop-corn that doesn't pop and sits in the bottom of the bag?). He suggested I reinstall the OS. I upgraded to win 2K pro and everything went smoothly. All the programs and files should be still on the system but none of them are pointed to from the regerstry. I can copy the saved game files, macros, data and other files I want to keep somewhere else and then just re-install the programs I want. Better then putting in a new hard drive to format that one.

Hope this helps others - Ray

P.S. Ya gotta keep a sense of humor :)

why does everyone say reinstall windows??? its because they haven't got a clue what they're on about.........

why don't they just pipe up and say "I don't know".... its because they want you to think they are computer gurus......

so far it seems like its related to System Restore...
whatever I've found so far suggests that you've disabled "System Restore" and deleted the "_RESTORE" directory, now it can't find it when it needs it........

One sight says:
Problem: When I reboot my Windows ME, sometimes i get a whole lot of the following messages: "windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2 %1:%2" What is causing this?
Possible Solution: You have disabled SYSTEM RESTORE and you have deleted the _RESTORE directory. As a result, Windows cannot find the directory necessary to create a restore point.

"System Restore" for any replies/answers to this query..

I had the same problem.
But my problem ended up being that I has Direct X 9 on my machine b4 putting on 8.1sdk

I had to put my hard drive into another machine as a slave. Then I took out everything that I could find that had to do with 8.1sdk.

then it booted on its own, then I uninstalled DX9 and put on 8.1sdk and everything was working good, then I put DX9 back on to see if it would work and it did. So that was my fix.
