Directory Not Updating 1

Here is the scenario.
I update the name on a phone to reflect a new user on that Extension.
The name is not reflected in the directory, or when that users extension is called.
Here is an example

Extension is 304.
It was assigned to Bob.
Bob leaves and a new user gets the phone. His name is Joe.
I do a Feature 983, and change the display name on the phone to Joe.
The directory does not update. When someone calls Joes phone or vice versa, it still says Bob.

I am sure I am doing something wrong, but I have no clue what. This phone system admin stuff was dropped in my lap and I am winging it.
Any help would be appreciated.

Feature 983 changes the name in the voicemail system, which is separate from the phone system. If you want the phone display to say "Bob" you have to go into config (feature **266344 with password 266344), choose the extension, and change the name there.

You have changed the name in the company directory. Now what you need to do is go to that persons phone and record the name in the company directory.
1. feature 981
2. that persons password
3.press 8
4.press 1 this will allow that person to (record)the name in the company directory

Actaully I was talking more about what vikmar was saying.
Not the actual recording, but the name that pops up on the phone screen when dialing that extension or vice versa.
Any ideas on that.
I think he has me started, I just need to go a little deeper on that.

Then you should go into admin
feature** 23646 then 23646 again
press second button down on right and get names
press top right button and get set names
press top right button again get show set
put in intercom number of set you want it will show (bob or whoever )
press change and type in new name
when through hit release.
to get (a) hit 2 once to get (b) hit 2 twice to get (c) hit 2- 3 times etc
