I've finally got down to adding directories to my sites as they reach completion (two so far).

Added 9 to a car sales site and 20 to IT site. Only had to do reciprical links to 3 so far and they don't have pop-ups. Find these link within 24 hours.

Is anyone aware of any directories that should be avoided. Don't want to get myself penalised for hanging out with the wrong crowd.

Are there any problems in going in too many, too soon?

Thanks for any help.

Mike

you won't get any penalties for a link to your site because it's mostly out of your control. It's who you link to that can hurt.

avoid things like this [thumbsdown]
webserach4u.com/part-racing-saab.html

note the interesting use of mis-spelling [shocked]

( off so it won't link)

Thanks again Chris.

BTW, your first reply to a thread of mine 3 weeks ago "search engine submission. waste of time. submit to directories. The SEs will find your site(s)"

Had to wait until the sites were finished until using directories, but in Google cache within 8 hours of submitting them.

Mike

If your site was cached in 8 hours, it likely wasn't submitting that got it there.
Many have reported submitting pages with no external links and not seeing a crawler visit at all and any that have reported a visit it's normally several days before a visit appears in the site logs.

what happens sometimes is that new domains appear on lists of recently registered names and gets picked up from there.
I've just had a domain put live. There was no DNS for it until around 36 hours ago, been registered 4 months, brand new name AFAICT, no history I could find. I've no links to it. There was no content until I uploaded it this morning. I've done no submissions at all and Google had the site listed (URL only) yesterday PM (about 12 hrs after going live). (anybody reading this later BTW it's currently 14:40 GMT, Oct 24[sup]th[/sup])

The worse thing is I'm not ready for the bots to arrive. It's gone up for the final testing and code debugging needed.

***k it!!

Checked three other sites (not submitted to any directories) and all five had been cached around 1.10am to 2.40am 23/10/04 GMT. One had absolutely no links from the submitted sites - so it was just conincidence. There goes a nice theory!!

If site x had a link back to new site y and was spidered would the spider always find site y or does it take several attempts?

I've had and lost google cache before on these sites - is it likely to happen again? My car site is getting some nice first page results with a popularity link of zero. Don't want to keep losing them.

Thanks,

Mike

shouldn't disappear again I would think. There was a biggish update last week so most DCs will have synched now and it normally takes 5 to 6 weeks to settle down.

Keyword research now [smile]

Guys,

If you are using the Google toolbar, that's likely where it found the URL. I'm not sure if they state that they use the info in this way but I had an admin area online for over a year without being picked up and it appeared in Google about 2 days after visiting it with the toolbar installed.

Hope this helps

If you are using the Google toolbar, that's likely where it found the URL...
Good catch! If you have the "Advanced functionality" switched on - basically that's the bit where it tells you what the current page's PR is - the toolbar tells Google which pages you visit (how else could they tell you its PR?). The Privacy Policy tells you that
Google may collect information about web pages that you are viewing when the advanced functionality is enabled. However, this advanced functionality is optional, and can be easily disabled and re-enabled at any time (by selecting "Privacy Information..." in the Toolbar's "Google" menu.)
Naughty of them, though, not to point out explicitly that such pages may be added to their index.

I've seen this mentioned a few times now, but I use the toolbar (advanced funcs on) and work on my testing server all day long and have only got one folder that the googlebot visits, and that's simply because the work I was doing for someone was posted as a live link in a forum (not here) when they asked for an opinion on which layout to go with.

I've been getting regular visits from Googlebots on my five sites since 23 October (every 24 to 48 hours). Yesterday they all showed as being indexed on either 29 or 30 October.

I've been playing around with keywords trying to manipulate the rankings, as they've virtually no links and all PR0 at this early stage.

Now today 3 are showing last Mondays' index and 2 have lost the index altogether.

Are they doing a major reindex? Although I was testing keywords, it was quite subtle and nothing too obvious.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

leave well alone for about 4 - 6 weeks, then start testing keywords.
