DxDiag has detected that there may have been a problem accessing DirectInput the last time the program was used."

This is the error I get when I open up DXDIAG to test my DirectX (9.0c) installation. The window also asks me if I want to bypass DirectInput or not. If I hit no, DXDIAG just closes.

I use Windows XP SP2 and DirectX 9.0c.

What's wrong?

This is probably more for a DirectX "dpvsetup" problem but it will only take a little while to try and you never know your luck.

"In Control Panel, double-click Sounds and Audio Devices.
On the Voice tab, under Voice Playback, click Advanced.
On the Performance tab, move the Hardware Acceleration slider at least one position to the right."

If it is already as far right as it will go. Move it to any other position and press Apply. Then move it back to far right and press Apply and OK."

Other things you can try are -

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with DirectX.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

HOW TO: Verify Unsigned Device Drivers in Windows XP

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

I tried everyting execpt reinstalling Windows. Ironicly, reinstalling was what I needed to do. Not Windows, but DirectX. After reinstalling DirectX, the error went away.
