Direct Copy Between 2 NT Servers

I have two NT 4.0 servers in a single domain model attached to the lan using a 10.0.0.0 network. I have installed a GB NIC in both servers and connected them with a crossover cable. I have assigned a 192.168.0.0 address to each of those cards. The cable has been checked for accuracy with a cable tester. The two cards will not communicate with each other. I would like to be able to copy large files between the two servers directly, taking the rest of the network out of the equation. Any ideas or suggestions appreciated.

Thanks

Some questions:

1. Can you ping from one computer to the other using the 192 IP address?

2. Does the subnet mask on both computers match?

3. Are there any lights on the cards and if so, are they lit when your cable is plugged in?

4. What protocols are installed on the two computers? At one time (and do not quote me on this) I thought you had to have IPX/SPX loaded so the crossover cable could be used. Not sure if am right or not.

Hope this helps.

If you have a spare hub you could try connecting via this using standard cables just in case the crossover cable is at fault.

You dont need IPX/SPX installed to use a crossover cable.

If it doesn't leak oil it must be empty!!

lanceja.....

1.I cannot ping between the two
2.subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 on both machines
3.Lights are lit when cable is plugged in initially but then go out.
4.TCP/IP is the only protocol installed.

NortonES2....

I may have to try your hub suggestion when I can get the server for maintenance again, although I did test the cable with a Fluke Lanmeter and it is wired correctly with no opens or shorts.

Thanks for both of your replies.

As the lights on the network cards go out, would suggest checking the card settings on both servers (speed, duplex etc) in case there is a mismatch between them.

Both cards are set for 1000MB Full Duplex.

I agree with NortonES2 that you can try a hub, with standard cables, to see if they talk.

Another thing you could try is to configure the cards for a slower speed. You did say 1000 Mb Full Duplex? I would try one of the following:

10MB/Full 10MB/Half
100MB/Full 100Mb/Half

If one of the above works, then stick with that. I am not sure (and again do not quote me) but can you do a crossover between 2 1Gb cards?

Hope this helps.

I already have 100MB connectivity across the backbone, leaving at the slower speed would defeat the purpose of the project.

I did get the cards to work, I had entered an erroneous subnet mask in one of the ip properties. I can now map a drive and copy over the GB crossover connection. To do so the mapping must be in the following form:

\\ipaddress\sharename

There is still a problem in that the copy takes the same amount of time going across either connection. It takes 1 GB of data, 6 minutes to copy over either connection.

To get rid of the ipaddress, you need to enter the information into the computer's hosts file.

As toward the copy, you said that it takes the same amount of time over either connection. Did you disconnect the connection to your LAN to force the copy to go through the cross over? If not, try that and see what the speed is.

Did you disable antivirus s/w on both sides before you started the file copy? That will slow the process down tremendously.

It sounds like your servers are defaulting to the 100MB connection. Can you disconnect the 100MB NICs?

I disabled the anti-virus with no increase in speed.

When I did the first test, I disconnected the 100MB cards from the network. There was no increase in speed.
