I am using a TN2181 with a 8410 digital phone set off premises I say around 5000ft + . When I replaced the instrument with a 6424D+M I do not get a dial tone. LED lights lit up when off hook, but no time display. You can press the menu button and that's about it. Just puzzled why the 8410 works why 6424D+M will not. Did checked the provisions and tried 2 new units with same results. Brought the phone and tested it okay at the shop. any ideas???

5000 ft is well past the specs. Try to double up on the pairs all the way from the mdf. I ran into this on a campus style install, and would like to hear other responses.

The maximum range of the TN2181 board is 3,500 feet using 24 AWG wire.

Thank you for the replies! I found the problem, the jack where the phone was connected has a parallel extension somewhere and when I disconnected it worked! Now wondering why the 8410 worked before and the 6424 won't

8410 sets are designed to work as both 2 wire and 4 wire sets. (Older TN754 boards.)

The old 4 wire sets were designed to be 2 channel service. One channel on the port would be for voice services, and the second channel would be for a data module that would connect your computer terminal (remember those?) back to a mainframe or terminal controller.

I'm guessing that the 8410 just adopted "second channel" configuration.

Carpe dialem! (Seize the line!)

How did you get a 6424 set to work at 5000ft? I can't get a 6408d set to work at 4700ft.
