A friend, Sheila, had a usb port(s)
--- on motherboard or on a (pci?) card go cactus
- damaged sockets or whatever.

Sheila is visiting from NSW at the moment.
The (not so gory) details are not important <grin>.

She bought a Swann Usb 2.0 5 port PCI card
it came with a "driver and user manual" CD

Sheilas son installed the card ( into the socket in the box),
but when she tries to install the drivers.
she gets
Found new hardware wizard
there was a problem installing this hardware
Universal System Bus ( USB ) Controller

An error has occurred during the installation of the device

The data is invalid

Click finish to close the wizard

back button, cancel button are greyed out [ disabled]
leaves finish button as the only option

A my computer : hardware report includes

USB controller

manufacturer Via

Model Via Rev 5 or later
USB universal host
controller

Driver usbuhci.sys

Supported

The above USB controller information
is displayed three times.
with exactly the same details.

Other details [ devices] in the report look ok
to me. My main pc [tower ] is away - gone to pc heaven,
but i'm getting a replacement - so Sheila is using my
monitor.
So the new hardware wizard might be barfing at my
monitor - but i don't see why.
She has broadband [ adsl - i think at home ]
and also runs a small network

Her pc also has an onboard modem - which she uses when travelling,
via dialup.

I don't think she has disabled any devices when trying to instal the
new usb 5 port gizmo.
So maybe new hardware wizard might be barfing at this.

Likewise she didn't disable the network cards, etc

I can post bmps of the 'hardware report' if that would help.

TIA for any help

It sounds like a REGISTRY Permission problem, to me...

see:

You receive a "Cannot install this hardware" or "An error occurred during the installation" error message when you try to install a PCI device

See if this link offers you a guide (only) as to what you can try?

"The data is invalid" Windows XP

The "Data is Invalid" might be because of a Permissions problem, possibly in the Registry?

ta ben & linney for the hands up.

sheila became impatient & put the box into
the local pc doctor. SO, i cant check anything at
the moment. Apparently she had had the problem for a little
while. It had also occurred when she tried installing a
new printer.

But i will have a look at the refs & let you know how she
got on.
