how can i get it so that clients have subsets of the repositories

ie i want some clients to see about 3 or 4 in the lists instead of them all

all is it possible so that they see it just as a drive

You will have to change your agent settings from ping to user defined and manually set the rep list.

can i define this so that the rep list will be distributed to sites

i will end up with about 250 distribution point and only want about 4 for each site rather than the huge list

is this controlled by the site .xml

yeah, I don't think it can be done. I have about 200 repos and every machine shows all the repos and the ones the machines in different area use are checked..
