Crystal Reports XI is a report development product, Business Objects Enterprise XI is a web based set of applications, including support for Crystal Reports, to manage buiness intelligence.
Crystal Enterprise nolonger exists.
Within Crystal Reports XI, there is a scaled down version of Crystal Enterprise calle Crystal Reports Server which allows for up to 20 concurrent users (maximum licensing allowed, default is 5 users I think). BOE XI is unlimited, as was Crystal Enterprise.
Basically BO decided that they could force medium to large scale implementations into using BOE XI by intentionally crippling the Crystal Reports Server product to 20 users.
A sleazeball but expected move by BO in my opinion, and they've lost and will continue to lose clients as a result.
At two contracts I've workjed they needed about 33-50 licenses, and did NOT need BO, just Crystal.
BO basically says too bad, the first taste was closer to free, now that we have ourtalons in you we'regoing to milk to dry every chance we get... I had a conversation with BO this week about this, and they basically agreed that this is their approach, there'sno valid reasonfor them oto have limited the licensing other than to force you into an even more costly, proprietary world.
Hopefully MS Reporting Services or someone will mature their product and they won't take this same proprietary, greedy approach to business and they can steal the market.

I agree with your assessment of the BO world and am looking forward to see the progress of MS Reporting Services, ActiveReports, LogiXML and some others out there. The big advantage/downfall of CR is that the average user with a minimum of database/programming/design skills/reporting skills can create some of the most inaccurate reports you can imagine and then it becomes painfully difficult to try and correct them and explain why they’re wrong.
