I went to the microsoft web site to download a patch for my XP and I have a choice between "windows xp 32 bit edition" and "windows xp 64 bit edition".

How do I determine which one I have to choose the correct patch?

Open Windows Explorer (not IE) and at the top tool bar select Help, About Windows, and it will tell you.

Though I do believe if you had XP 64-bit you would certainly know as it is fairly rare.

Thanks! It said I have version 5.1 (service pack 1).

If it was 64-bit it would say so very clearly, including in the little picture banner at the top of the window that opens under Help.
