Difference between IOS and IOS-XR

Can someone tell me what would be the major difference between IOS and IOS-XR on a cisco router, apart from both have different interfaces, XR probably have extra features and UNIX interface?. Can you use XR on both edge and core routing?.

XR is only being deployed on the high end platforms such as the GSR and ASR series.

Its mostly alike with IOS, it doesn't have full feature parity yet though.
