No flamewars here. This is another of the heated controversies in the linux community.
They are both good in their own way, nuff said.

When KDE started some people had 'issues' with it because it used the QT/X11 toolkit from trolltech (
Because QT was (and remains) not GPL, some people regard Gnome as more 'pure' to to Linux/GPL ethic. Gnome really started as an effort to overcome this 'problem' --> .

Politics aside, in terms of functionality I'd say that KDE maybe has a slight edge. Gnome, on the other hand, is now more widely used and will be the replacement for CDE on Sun Solaris --> But as marsd says, its all a matter of personal preference which is one of the many wonders of linux - you are spoilt for choice.

For information , CDE on HP UX will be replaced too by
GNOME .
It will be present on Linux ,Sun & HP-UX as desktop
