I was working on a computer that was infected. After I removed the virus's and trojans, I did a XP repair on the computer. The user had a password (which I know), however after the repair, I can't access the user files.
Obviously if he had a password only the User, and an Admnistrator can access those files.
And even the the Administrator may need to take ownership of them.
If the problem is you can't access the files from the User profile itself, perhaps the permissions got reset. you may need to go into the security tab of the encompassing folder and give the user the ability to access those files.

Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.
The computer has XP home and there is no security tab (that I know about). The hard drive was backed up but I would still like to see if I can access the User folder. Right now there is only one user. When I go to my computer C driver documents and settings and then I click on the old User file it says Access denied. There is no place to log in. I tried safe mode no luck.
But the security tab should have been available from Safe Mode.

Interesting tidbit. I wonder if it works on Home versions of Vista and 7.
I still can;t understand why MS would choose to make it so difficult to access. If its to make users life easier o.k. But why no have an option of enabling it from say control Panel.

When you do a repair install and it asks to create a user never put the same user as the old install, i usually create an xxyy user for first boot the log out and log in and you normally get two or more users to choose from
the new one and any other that were there before.
If you take ownership of the old account then logon as admin in safe mode then copy the old user profile to the new user.
