Ok I started with Security + and Server + as my certification studies, but should have I started with the A + certification?

It depends on what area you want to go into, if it's service desk (help desk) and fixing desktop os\hardware issues then yes you should have started with the A+, however if you want to go down the Security and Server hardware route then you're ok.

I would add that finding work in the Security and Server field with no real world experience might prove difficult, sometimes starting lower and working your way up is the best approach.

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

beaner2005,

As Simon said - you can pretty much take CompTIA exams as you want - but I will tell you what one of the Cisco Security CCIE's told us at a Cisco Networkers convention a few years back. He told us that the ONLY way to secure a network is to UNDERSTAND how it works first !!!!

He felt that for Security - the person should be at very least a CCNA but felt the understanding of networking/routing and switching that a CCNP has would be much better. He said that security unless you are just securing "grandma's computer" is NOT something that you do "part-time" or you will get sued :-(

I think you could say the same for screwing up someone's data on their server - you better know computer repair, computers/servers and the OS's running on the servers VERY WELL before you touch them!!!

If you are just fixing/securing the neighbors computers...... just remember, if and when you screw up ......... however, this is totally different when you hold yourself out as a Security or Server person who can do the job - BETTER KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING !!!!!!!

Hope this helps!!

o you have any IT experience? If not then you should probably go with A+ first. A+ will help you get your foot in the door at an entry level IT job. Without the experience to back it up, Security+ and Server+ aren't all that useful.
