I setup a new computer soyo amd motherboard 1gig athlon cpu. usr 56k fas winmodem. the system shows and queries modem fine. when trying to connect to any isp over the modem i get either an connection error 50, a 6, and sometimes it just keeps trying to redial. You can hear the tones and it sounds like it connects but it does not. I even tried a lucent winmodem, another type of soyo amd motherboard. None of these had any positive effect. The only way I can get connected to an isp is to load win98. everything works fine. i think i have tried about every thread and link with no help. some out there has got to have seen this issue also. Thanks for the help.

It sounds like your modem isn't compatible? But first check with your ISP because their disc might only be for the 9x series: 95, 98 ME. This is what happened to me and I had to contact my ISP to get a new disc for XP. If you did the compatibility test using Xp it would have told you if your modem was ok? If, your modem is older than 98 might to download a new driver. go into control panel, system, hardware, device manager and look to see if you have a yellow exclamation mark or yellow question mark beside your modem, if so, try troubleshoot and see if you can update the driver!?

I hate internal modems . In scandinavia there
is not many that bothers with PCI modem cards ,
there must be hundreds of post with
incompatible PCI card based modems.
They steal resoures to. External modem
connected to com1 is the best ,or maybe an external usb modem.
A serial comport can handle upto 115k ,USB a lot more.
So with 56kbps i just could be outside.

Not to offend someone ,but it's just my humble opinion.

The modem is new I just bought it in July and it was recommended for XP. I am all ready running the latest software for the ISP. I also tried the most common ones like MSN,AOL, and so on. No of them have an effect.

I had exactly the same problem when I changed from 98 to XP.
I had made sure that I was using 200/XP drivers, result no connection and had to use 98 on another partition for internet connections thro the same modem (Intel Ham Data voice Fax V90).

Problem was solved by using the drivers from 98 in XP, in fact they work better in XP than in 98.

Connections speeds are either 49.2 or 50.6K everytime, mind you I had to badger my Telecoms company to make sure that my line was upto scratch.

Neither the 98 or xp drivers for the modem have a positive effect.

Switch off any Firewall and AV programs, then try connecting again.

Tried switching both Firewall and AV off, no effect.

The install is correct for both machines. I did not find any issues with the irq settings either.

One more thing, what port is the modem set to?
When I installed XP the modem was assigned to COM 2, I could not dial out until it was set on COM 3 or 4.

Toolman

com3 or com4 i had install under both ports.
